LaAndrea Deloyce

2021

Acrylic, felt, and glass on canvas

Layered felt shapes create a flower, in the center of which we see two children hugging one another. In comparison to LaAndrea Deloyce’s Hold Me as the Seasons Change, the girl’s expression is markedly different, as she joyously embraces a loved one. The artist includes water droplets again, however, here they appear to mimic morning dew rather than raindrops suggesting a restorative quality. In her work, Deloyce challenges the media’s primarily trauma-based depictions of Black people. The creation of scenes of Black love and tenderness constitutes a form of protest for the artist.
