Cleavage
Subject
Progression of aging black and white boys.
Description
The subject of this lithograph is a series of scenes in which a white child or adult is interacting with a black child or adult. The top of the image depicts two young boys, one black and one white, lying next to each other in the grass, looking at a flower. Below them the two boys, one black and one white, are both barefoot and wearing overalls, playing horseshoes together. On the right, an older black woman in a floral dress and sun hat is holding a small white child, both wearing smiles. At the center, two boys are standing across from each other, one white and one black. The white boy is dressed in a uniform, with a hat and shoes, while the black boy is in overalls and barefoot. They are staring warily at one another across the divide. In the foreground, a wooden post fence splits the image, with a white man on a horse to the viewer's right and a black man in overalls on the viewer's right. They are staring at each other, unsmiling, across the fence.
