The Powerful Woman | A Satimbe Mask
This object is known as a "Satimbe" mask. "Satimbe", meaning "sister on the head", masks are mounted with the figure of a strong, powerful-looking woman. This female figure has been attributed to two women in Dogon history, Yayemme and Yasigi. Yayemme was the first woman to learn the true power of masks. Yasigi, daughter of Amma, is strongly linked to Dogon creation stories and is the Goddess of dancing, beer-making, and masks. The shape of the mask itself references the architecture of Dogon mosques. "Satimbe" masks would have been used during important events such as funerals or harvest festivals.
