Open Helmet

Description

This is a helmet. It is made of metal. It was made by the Dogon of Mali, Africa. The base is a circular metal band. Two bands cross and connect at four points on the base. On each end of the two bands are pairs of human figures. At the crossing at the top, is a knob-like appendage with two chameleons that stands on either side of it. The human figures most likely represent Nommo, the first living being made by the creator Amma. Nommo multiplied himself into four sets of twins, represented here. The eight primordial ancestors of Nommo were put on an ark and sent to Earth with everything humankind would need. Nommo and his ancestors continue to serve as stewards of the universe. The chameleons are associated heavily with Nommo as his skin was green and could even change colors. Helmets such as this are not just for protection but are signs of status.
