Symbols of Protection | A Granary Door
Granary doors and shutters protect a Dogon family's store of grain, which is vital considering how difficult farming is on the sometimes rocky, dry landscape of Mali. To offer further protection, figures from Dogon religion, ancestors, masks, and scenes of daily life and nature are etched into doors. Because the Dogon value their granary stores as such a safe place, they will also put their family valuables and altars there as well. Both the small door bolt and larger door keep are in the shape of antelope heads. Antelopes are strongly tied with Amma, the creator sky god, and may add more spiritual protection.
