Outside of our own imaginations, one of the most exciting times for many of us as children comes from family trips—the chance to break out of the routine and see or do something new. Cloar’s adventures centered on the Earle Depot in Memphis, where he would wait for the train to take him to Hot Springs, a spa town in Arkansas. Despite the pleasant associations, young Cloar is standing aloof from his parents. Many of his works depict him separate from his family, revealing his feelings as the odd child out. He often wondered as a child whether he were not adopted, stolen from gypsies, or the lost orphan of noble parents who had been eaten by panthers.
