Title
Study for "Lightning that Struck Rufo Barcliff"
Subject
Man being struck by lightning.
Description
The subject of this drawing is two men standing by a tree in a forest, axes in hand, with a bolt of lightning striking the head of the man on the viewer's left. Rufo Barcliff was struck by lightning and killed while felling trees sometime between 1914 and 1920, when Cloar was still a boy. His depiction is based on what he remembers hearing about the story.
