Title
Study for "The Artist"
Subject
Young boy drawing a mural.
Description
This is a two-dimensional graphite sketch on yellowing paper. Extending from the viewer's top right corner are tree branches covered in small buds or leaves. The subject of the drawing is a young boy who is drawing a western style mural on a brick wall with chalk. The boy is hunched over, with his right hand outstretched to draw. To his right, a little girl with short hair stands with her left hand on her hip, watching the boy artist. She is wearing a collared, knee-length dress. In front of the boy is a small, wooden crate, placed before the beginnings of a brick wall. The far left side of the "wall" has the profile of a man with short hair, a straight nose, and a squared jaw, facing right. He is wearing a cowboy hat, a buttoned down shirt with a neck cloth, wide buttoned chaps, and boots. His right hand is extended out and on his right hip is a holstered pistol on an ammo belt. The center of the drawing has the profile of another man with short hair, a large nose, and a thin mustache. He wears a cowboy hat, buttoned vest over a long-sleeved shirt, neck cloth, wool chaps, and boots. He is facing the man to his left, with two pistols drawn. An empty holster is at his left hip, attached to two crossing ammo belts. On the far right of the wall is the drawing of a woman, facing left. She is wearing a cowboy hat, has a small, pointed nose and chin, wide eyes, and shoulder-length wavy hair. She is wearing a long-sleeved shirt with fringed cuffs decorated with a star, tucked into tight pants, with detailed floral boots. Her left hand has drawn a pistol, with the empty holster at her left hip.
