Untitled from Moonstrips Empire News, 1967, Screenprint on paper

Eduardo Paolozzi, Scottish, 1924-2005

"This work from AMUM's collection, Untitled from 'Moonstrips Empire News' by artist Eduardo Paolozzi is a striking combination of bold statement colors with sharp but strategic interruptions of soft pastel colors. The upper right corner of the print immediately reminds me of the Rubik's Cube puzzle that was popular in the 1980's. Yet, it also reminds me of fabric swatches when planning for the layout of a garment or an interior decorating project or a quilting project design. This work makes me ask, "Why did the artist choose totally mismatched color schemes for this print?" I answered my own question thinking that trying to match the artist's intent with my personal preference on how colors should be matched would be much like the endless pursuit of trying to match all four sides of that Rubik's Cube puzzle.
