Toy Car

Mountain Toy Makers

Gift of William Huff

"There is a small wooden toy car in our collections that was given to us by William Huff. The stamp on the bottom of the car says Mountain Toy Makers. It is simply designed with its body being round in shape with a flat bottom reminiscent, perhaps, of the Volkswagen Bug of the 1960s. It is unpainted and unadorned – just plain wood. There are no screws or nails in the car. The wheels are secured to the axles with dowel joints. Windows on either side of the car are hinted at by drilling a single hole through the body. When you first see the car you might think that the wheels are broken because they are oval instead of round and cut on an angle. Surely, you would think, this car can’t roll - but it does! Not only does it roll but it does so without jerking around and the body of the car stays level. We may never know why the maker of this toy car chose to make the wheels this way but I am personally impressed with this unique, intriguing, engineering wonder."
