Untitled Graphite Sketches, ca. 1905

Samuel H. Crone, American, 1858-1913

Gift of William S. Huff

I chose this piece for the pick of the week because I personally love how Crone sketched to prepare for his paintings. I like this sketch in particular because of how he drew such detail. It is amazing to see sketches that are so simple but express so much. Crone made multiple sketches of people just standing and moving slightly in different positions. I can truly tell that Crone sat for hours to make sure that he tried out every idea he came up with. Not only is the time he put into his pieces amazing, but the amount of effort and detail is as well. These sketches alone showcase how Crone was always able to create such beautiful paintings. He put his heart and soul into practicing his craft and it shows.
