"I am in love with this recent acquisition to AMUM’s African collection. This model of a coffin, made for a fisherman, was collected from the workshop of world-renowned fantasy coffin artist Paa Joe (Joseph Ashong). At the age of fifteen, Paa Joe began an apprenticeship with family member Kane Kwei (1922-1992), who is credited as being the first person to popularize fantasy coffins. In 1976, Paa Joe opened his own shop, Paa Joe Coffin Works. Over the years, Paa Joe has made thousands of coffins, most of which are inspired by an important aspect of the deceased’s life. He has also taken on apprentices who have become successful fantasy coffin makers. Today, Paa Joe’s fantastic creations are recognized as art works in their own right and can be found in private collections and museums worldwide. I mean, we all have to leave this world at some point, right? Why not go out in style?"
